In September 2024, Sista’s Acting Program Manager, Josepheen Tarianga, and Communications and Advocacy Coordinator, Elsie Molou, travelled to Chiang Mai, Thailand, to attend the Asia Pacific Feminist Forum (APFF) for the very first time. The three-day forum, themed “Feminist World-Building: Creative Energies, Collective Journeys”, brought together feminists, activists, and Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) from across Asia and the Pacific to share experiences, strengthen solidarity, and reimagine feminist futures.

For Sista, this was not only a chance to represent Vanuatu civil society on the regional stage, but also to connect with the broader feminist movement beyond the We Rise Coalition.

The Sista team joined over 37 Pacific delegates among hundreds of participants, attending plenaries, workshops, and solidarity events.

Josepheen represented Sista in two panel discussions:

  • “Fighting Beyond the #MeToo Movement” (hosted by We Rise Coalition), where she spoke about Sista’s work on sexual harassment in Vanuatu, including findings from the national survey and ongoing advocacy to outlaw harassment in law.
  • “Pacific Feminist Approaches to Access to Justice” (hosted by FWRM), where she contextualised barriers to justice for women and girls in Vanuatu, highlighted Sista’s survivor-led advocacy approach, and discussed the current climate for gender and SOGIE rights.

Alongside panel contributions, the team engaged in workshops, solidarity actions, and networking with partners such as Fiji Women’s Rights Movement, Brown Girl Woke, Voice for Change, and many other feminist organizations across Asia and the Pacific.

Both team members experienced APFF for the first time, proudly representing Vanuatu civil society, the Pacific, and the We Rise Coalition. Throughout the forum, they built connections with feminists across Asia and the Pacific, discovering shared challenges and learning from diverse approaches to advancing gender justice. The program highlighted creative forms of feminist resistance — from art, poetry, and song in the Fearless Collective workshop to the Feminist Bazaar and Really Really Free Market — showcasing how activism can resist and reimagine in powerful ways. Sista’s own contributions in panel discussions brought attention to the urgent need to address workplace sexual harassment and barriers to justice in Vanuatu. Above all, the gathering reinforced bonds of sisterhood with We Rise partners and celebrated the strength of collective action.

APFF 2024 was an eye-opening and empowering experience for the Sista team. The event deepened their understanding of how struggles in Vanuatu connect to wider regional issues such as militarism, authoritarianism, and shrinking civic spaces. It also reaffirmed the importance of creative approaches — art, storytelling, and cultural expression — in feminist resistance.

While the program was dense and logistical challenges made participation demanding, the learnings and networks gained far outweighed the difficulties. Sista returns inspired to continue its advocacy with renewed energy, proud to have amplified the voices of Ni-Vanuatu women on an international stage.

Sista extends thanks to the Asia Pacific Forum on Women, Law, and Development (APWLD) for convening the gathering, to our We Rise Coalition partners for solidarity and collaboration, and to all the Pacific feminists who stood together to amplify our collective voice.
