August was a full month for the Sista team!

From connecting with feminist movements across the Pacific and creating spaces for young people to build their leadership, to learning new ways to use technology and media in our work, there was plenty happening both in and outside the Sista office.

And of course, August also brought a special moment for the Sista team as we welcomed back our Executive Director, Yasmine, from maternity leave.  It was lovely to have her back with the team as we continued the work of strengthening our systems, building partnerships and keeping Sista moving forward.

Here’s a little look at what Sista was up to throughout August.

Advancing women’s leadership and representation

Sista shows up at Youth Parliament 2026

Sista was honoured to support Youth Parliament 2026, which brought together more than 60 young people from Vanuatu’s six provinces to strengthen their understanding of parliamentary processes, civic participation and leadership.

Sista’s Program Manager, Josepheen Tarianga, attended the opening dinner on 12 August and was invited on 17 August to speak with participants about Sista’s work and the role of civil society in nation building.

Held under the theme “Empowering Youths Today to Become Tomorrow’s Great Leaders,” the programme created a space for young people to engage in debate, build confidence and explore their role in participating in decisions that affect their communities and country.

Mind & Bodi Tok Podcast

Sista developed and produced the five-episode Mind & Bodi Tok Podcast series, creating an accessible space to talk about self-care, mental health and wellbeing in everyday life.

The series explored topics including looking after our bodies, burnout, stress, movement, sleep and healthier ways of coping when life feels overwhelming. Local wellbeing practitioners Sue Harris of Yumi Heal Therapy and Bianca Weller of Relax Massage and Spa also joined the conversations, alongside Sista Program Manager Josepheen Tarianga.

The podcast also gave Elsie and Umi the opportunity to step outside their usual behind-the-camera roles and build confidence in presenting and conversational storytelling, while strengthening Sista’s use of media and digital storytelling.

Strengthening the feminist movement in Vanuatu and the Pacific to progress gender equality

Preparing for the 4th Pacific Feminist Forum

Throughout August, Sista continued its work as part of the Working Group preparing for the 4th Pacific Feminist Forum (PFF), which will be held in Fiji from 21–25 September 2026.

The PFF brings together feminists, activists and advocates from across the Pacific to strengthen solidarity, connections and networks, while creating space to reflect, regroup, learn and share.

More than 10 Pacific Island nations are expected to be represented, with countries bringing Calls to Action developed through their National Feminist Forums. Sista is proud to be part of the working group supporting the forum and Vanuatu’s representation.

Vanuatu Literary Awards 2026 – Publication & Promotion Planning

On 25 August, Sista’s Communications & Advocacy Coordinator met with the Vanuatu Literary Awards team to discuss the publication and promotion process for the 2026 awards.

The meeting clarified roles and responsibilities across the editorial, publication and promotion stages, including the handover of publication-ready pieces, publication sequence and requirements for the 35 selected works.

Sista’s role in developing publication graphics, social media tiles and captions was also discussed, alongside the use of a Publication Tracker to coordinate the rollout and monitor progress.

Eliminating gender-based violence and harmful stereotypes

Sista and REACH Famili Senta secure UN Trust Fund support

Sista and REACH Famili Senta have successfully secured four-year funding through the UN Trust Fund for the Women are accepted, valued, empowered and safe (WAVES) in Vanuatu programme.

The programme will be implemented in Tanna and Efate and will work with victim-survivors, perpetrators and family units to address violence through promoting healthy family dynamics and positive masculinity.

The programme will also support advocacy and awareness-raising around the impacts of violence on nation building, while working with men and boys to challenge harmful gender stereotypes and taboo topics.

Rewriting the Story: Media, Gender and Politics – Training of Trainers

On 17–18 August, Sista’s Communications & Advocacy Coordinator participated in the Rewriting the Story: Media, Gender and Politics Training of Trainers, co-hosted by the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and Media Association of Vanuatu (MAV).

The two-day training explored gender representation in media coverage of women and men in political and public life, with discussions on how journalists and media workers can reflect on and strengthen their reporting.

Participants were also equipped with tools and approaches to support future training and skills-sharing within their newsrooms and professional networks.

Building a resilient, locally-led, feminist organization

Feminist Tech Exchange Training

From 3–7 August, Sista’s Communications & Advocacy Coordinator participated in the Feminist Tech Exchange training in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The training brought together feminist organisations and activists from different countries and contexts to explore technology, power, communications and feminist movements. Sessions covered digital safety, technology-facilitated gender-based violence, alternative communications infrastructure, crisis communications, self-care and strengthening feminist networks.

The exchange provided an opportunity for Sista to learn from other feminist organisations and reflect on how technology and communications connect with our work in Vanuatu — including alternative ways of communicating during disasters and network disruptions, practical digital safety tools and the importance of collective care.

Recruitment of a French volunteer for Sista

Throughout August, Sista worked closely with France Volontaires Vanuatu to recruit a volunteer who will support the strengthening of Sista’s HR systems and processes, as well as capacity building within the team.

Following online interviews with suitable candidates, Sista selected a successful candidate and is now looking forward to welcoming the volunteer and the knowledge and experience they will bring to the team.
