The David sisters Chloe and Claudie are grateful to be part of Fiji Athletics 2022 Relay Championship that was held at the HFC Bank Stadium last Saturday.
With Vanuatu Athletics Federation not functioning with local competition, development programme the sisters father David Merick is grateful to have his daughters engaging with Athletics Fiji programme.
“There is nothing happening in Vanuatu Athletics, World athletics will only release this same funding if Vanuatu Athletics will organise something but at the moment nothing is happening.
“This is advantage to the girls as they prepare for the new season,” Merick said.
According to the Fiji Times newspaper The 2022 Fiji Relay Championship and season opener is part of the World Athletics program to attract young people to athletics.
Athletics Fiji development officer, former Fiji and South Pacific decathlon champion and Olympian Albert Miller said it’s a worldwide program to try and attract more participants in the sport.
“So we got funding from World Athletics to our proposal was to basically conduct national relays here,” he said.
“We’re grateful to World Athletics for the funding, basically funding transportation and other things, hiring of the facility.”
The David sisters were part of the Laucala Bay Athletics club.
“They did really well, the day was more of relays and fun day for our promising athletes.
“We had a good turnout,” Merick said.
