Vanuatu scholar and policy expert Anna Naupa has extended her warm congratulations to Mrs. Cherol Ala on her official appointment as Director General (DG) of the Ministry of Justice, Youth and Sports (MoJYCS), calling her leadership a landmark for women in governance and an inspiration for the country.

“DG Ala, her fellow woman DG Shirley Tokon, all their female predecessors, and the many women who have also served as Directors and in senior roles throughout the government are role models to everyone for their perseverance and success,” Ms Naupa said. “This demonstrates that our women are capable of attaining high positions on their own merit, and reflects the inclusive governance we hope to see more of in Vanuatu.”

DG Ala replaces Acting DG Arthur Faerua, who had been serving in the role temporarily. Mr. Faerua, in an interview with the Vanuatu Daily Post, welcomed Mrs. Ala’s appointment and thanked the ministry staff for their dedication during his tenure. “I am proud of the goals we achieved together with the staff,” he said.

DG Ala now joins a growing number of women leaders within the public service, a development many see as a step forward for gender equality and inclusive leadership in the country.
