Thursday 8 – 9am, FM107

On Thursday 10th August,  ‘EmPawa Hour’ was launched on FM107 and focused on ‘Women’s Leadership in Sport’. Hosted by Heather Maraki, Empawa Hour is an all female radio show by Van2017 as part of Van2017’s commitment to the empowerment of women and girls in Vanuatu.

Relvie Poilapa

Community Relations and Special Events Supervisor of Van2017 + First woman President of the Vanuatu Hockey Federation, and current Secretary General of VHF.

Mary Estelle Mahuk

Assistant office administrator Van2017 + known as the ‘Golden Mama’ of Vanuatu as she has won more than 20 gold medals in her athletic career + continues to hold national records in athletics + only female representing Vanuatu from 1980s to 2000 in athletics. 

Mary Siro

Project Coordinator of the Youth at Work Program run within the Ministry of Youth and Sport. Mary is also a Hockey Silver Medalist of the PNG 2015 Pacific Games, a previous Board Member of the Vanuatu Hockey Federation, and recipient of the Prestigious 2016 Queens Young Leader award for the community development and social awareness programs she coordinated through sports.

Jill Aru

Community Educator of the Vanuatu Women’s Center.


Mary Estelle shared her journey as a rising female athlete who went on to achieve historic feats including holding the highest record of gold medals than any other athlete in Vanuatu while Mary Siro shared her story of balancing sports, motherhood and work. The key message for all women who play sports? Time management. The message was especially driven by Mary Estelle who said that time management is the key to success, especially for mothers.
