Over 30 farmers who are members of Tongoa Farmers Association participated in the Shepherds Mini Agriculture Show (SMAS) on the island of Emae that commenced on Tuesday this week, and will end tomorrow Friday 21st June 2019.

The farmers were from sectors of Agriculture, Forestry, Livestock, handicrafts and fisheries.

Amongst the male farmers were five female farmers who were fortunate to participate in the event. The Department of Agriculture and Rural Department (DARD)’s Communications Officer, Elizabeth Graham, caught up with Mere Pakoa, one of the female farmers.

“This is my first time to participate in an event like the SMAS.

I am so happy to meet other farmers, exchange ideas and share experiences,” said farmer Pakoa.

Mrs Pakoa came with some fruits and weaved baskets. She encourages other female farmers to participate in such events to see what women can produce with their hands to earn a living.

“Women can weave mats and baskets and do other things to earn income for their families,” she said.

The Tongoa farmers stall was packed with fruits, root crops like yam, animals and handicrafts.
