A group of young men from Freshwota 6 have taken matters into their own hands to repair and paint the speed bumps on their street, demonstrating a strong sense of community ownership and responsibility.

Using funds raised through local fundraising efforts and support from sponsors, the boys completed the work without waiting for assistance from the authorities. Their initiative has been praised by residents as a powerful example of civic pride and action.

Bruno Carlo, Youth President of the Freshwota 6, said the idea came from a concern for the safety of children and all community members living in the area.

“We live in a community, and we should have speed bumps for the safety of our children — not just the children, but for all of us who live here,” Mr. Carlo said.

“The bumps have been there for a long time, but they were worn out. The boys saw it was needed, so we patched and painted them ourselves. We raised funds for this, and some sponsors also contributed. This is the result of our combined efforts.”

He also encouraged other communities in Port Vila to consider doing the same.

“If you are thinking of creating or repairing a speed bump in your area, go ahead. It’s for the safety of our communities,” he said.

Their proactive approach echoes the timeless message of community service: don’t ask what the country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.
