For Sista Gat Style this month we are celebrating the beautiful Leikita Kalorib!
A mother, activist and leader who lives her life as an instrument to God – Leikita has committed her life to contributing to her community and country. She believes that being able to facilitate growth and development for young women and girls should include working with young men and boys to create a holistic and positive impact to Vanuatu’s society. She lives by this quote “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.”

Tell us about your family?
I am blessed with three loving and supportive people and two adorable children in my family. I am a mother to a humorous and beautiful hearted 10-year-old son and aunt to a curious 1-year-old niece. My mum and grandfather, my brother and his partner are my pillars of strength and unfading base of support; not forgetting my late grandmother and brother who I am grateful for. My uncles, aunts, cousins and 2 adorable nephews are my extended blessings, whose prayers, love, and support are endless.
What do you like to do in your spare time? Any hobbies?
I love to take my son on ‘mummy and son’ dates where we enjoy our favourite food, or go window shopping, or go to the secondhand outlets, drive loops around town or have a candy filled movie night at home. I also enjoy playing with my energetic niece and adore the cute things she does or says. I really enjoy spending time with mum, either going to the secondhand outlets, going shopping at Au Bon Marche, or just listening to her tell me about her day. Quite often, I enjoy my own space to sit and reflect on things. I love listening to Christian music, singing, and worshipping God with the CMFI worship team and youth, and also listen to preaching’s and teachings on YouTube.
What do you study? Do you work?
I am blessed to have started my working journey with Vanuatu Women’s Centre in 2013-2019. My passion in the field of gender equality and ending violence against women and children was founded in those years. I was privileged to work under the leadership of two of my role models whose legacy is imprinted in my passion, Merilyn Tahi (Former Coordinator of VWC) and Juliet Hunt (VWC Consultant).
Today, I work at Care International as a Gender Equality Together Project Manager for the Young Women’s Leadership Program (YWLP). I am always learning in my role; it is challenging but the growth in skills and knowledge is rewarding. I work with a vibrant team of young women at CARE and Sista (our partner in this project) in a three-year project funded by the Australian and New Zealand government. This year we are developing and piloting new MEAL (Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning) Framework and activities to engage young men, involving family members, creating intergenerational mentoring and coaching space and exposing YWLP Alumni network to advocacy events and influence for gender equality and ending violence against women and girls and building leadership skills and knowledge.
What do you aspire to do in the future?
I aspire to continue working in the space of gender equality because I love helping people and I love facilitating growth and development. I would love to be a mentor or role model for young women to support their growth and facilitate leadership skills to then become the next leaders of our country. I would love to be able to take young women and men and support them to become better versions of themselves – in the sense that they can express their feelings and they don’t fear judgement from society. I’d like to make that change and I’d like to be that change.
What is a quote that you live by?
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I not to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn’t serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us, it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”– A poem by Marriane Williamson.
How would you describe your style?
Trendy, Smart, Chic. My style depends on my mood and the occasion.
Who influences your style?
Definitely my mother! My mum would always say ‘Wear what makes you comfortable and what makes you feel beautiful. What you wear sets your mood.’
She loves fashion as well and is always smartly dressed. She likes to colour code her outfits, pairing her clothes with the same coloured scrunchy, earrings, lipstick, and matching shoes. We have a different sense of style, but I know I can go to her for fashion advice. Then again, I do wear what I feel l am in the mood for or the occasion.
What beauty products do you use?
For my skin I use body oil or Vaseline unscented body lotion. For perfume, I love wearing Lady Million and Carolina Herrera. I occasionally wear lipstick and when I do, I like to outline my lips with a black lipliner and a complimenting shade of lipstick.
Any fashion tips?
Just be you. We are all different shapes and sizes but knowing what your style is and what best suits you will not only make you look and feel great but speaks volume for your confidence and embraces your individuality and uniqueness. I appreciate and admire fashion and beauty and I love to compliment people on their look and their outfit. When someone looks good, tell them! Let others know that you are celebrating their effort into making themselves look good. I will celebrate you with compliments because you are a good looking creation!
What does being a woman mean to you?
To me, being a woman means knowing your self-worth. Women are a fine specimen created with greatness and with love. Like my favourite quote, “We ask ourselves, who am I not to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually who are you not to be? We were born to manifest the glory of God that is within us, it’s in everyone.” Knowing yourself as a woman and your purpose will automatically liberate others of their fears and doubts and unconsciously inspire them to find their own self-worth and become the women they were created to be – an empowered mother, a bold young woman, an inspiring leader, a prayer warrior!
