Vanuatu chess player Lou-Anne Delrieu has achieved a major milestone this week, earning the Women’s Candidate Master (WCM) title in Uzbekistan.

The 46th FIDE Chess Olympiad 2026 in Samarkand, is currently underway kicking off from September 15 and finishing tomrrow, bringing together chess players from around the world.

The achievement was confirmed by Vanuatu chess representative Rik Hinton, who said Delrieu earned the title through her performances while representing Vanuatu on Board 1 in the women’s section.

Her victories against opponents from Comoros Islands, British Virgin Islands, Bhutan and Antigua and Barbuda helped her secure the WCM title.

The milestone represents an important step in Delrieu’s chess development and could inspire more young players in Vanuatu to take up the sport.

Vanuatu is also hoping for further individual titles, with Jayson Tasso, Pierre Delrieu and Marc Delrieu each needing one more win or a draw to secure their Candidate Master titles.

The players have so far recorded individual victories against opponents from Tonga, Kiribati, Bahamas, Gambia and St Kitts and Nevis.

Away from competition, both Vanuatu teams recently celebrated victories with a sing-along accompanied by restaurant guitarist Max, who has become an honorary member of the team.

The players also used their recent day off to explore some of Uzbekistan’s historic landmarks, including Registan Square, Shah-i-Zinda, the Amir Timur Mausoleum and the Imam al-Bukhari Complex.

Hinton said the team remains in high spirits, with the Vanuatu players making new friends in the games room and gaining attention for their colourful outfits and big smiles.
