port-vila-lord-mayorAssistant Police Commissioner and Commander South, Jackson Noal, confirmed yesterday that his officers detained the Port Vila Mayor, Albert Daniel, in relation to an alleged hit and run at Banana Bay.

The Mayor was reported by police to be driving under the influence of alcohol in the Port Vila Municipal Council Mayor’s official truck.

Daniel was reportedly apprehended by the police near North Efate where he was visiting relatives.

Police say the mayor will be charged and is expected to be released awaiting a court hearing where his fate will be determined by the Court.

Police Commander South, Mr Noal, has issued a stern warning to drivers not to drink and drive saying police will not hesitate to arrest anyone during the New Year celebration, even if they are holding a high office.

“It does not matter what title you hold, we will arrest anyone that does not respect the law,” Mr Noal warned.

The operation carried out by the police during the Christmas and New Year period is done in collaboration with the Port Vila Municipal Wardens.
