Minister of Health Robert Bohn has revealed plans to develop a new national hospital on a separate site, with the current Vanuatu National Hospital (VNH) potentially transformed into a dedicated facility for mothers and babies.
Speaking on the Kava mo Kajap podcast with host Mavuku Tokona, Minister Bohn said Vanuatu needs to look beyond the current health system and plan for the next 50 years.
Bohn said that while VNH has served the country for decades, expanding the current site to meet future demands would create challenges.
“I think that Vanuatu has done well with its situation for the last 50 years, but I’m looking at the next 50 years, and I would like to see a national hospital, a brand new one built, a greenfield space, a new project to be built,” Bohn said.
The Minister said his vision would be for VNH to become a mothers’ and children’s hospital, providing a dedicated space for women and children.
“I think it would be a very good hospital for mothers, particularly as we look at the number of births,” he said.
Bohn said Vanuatu is currently recording between 300 and 350 births every month, a figure he expects to increase in coming years.
He explained that continuing to expand VNH could eventually require multi-storey buildings because of limited space.
“The problem with the current site is to project out to 2040, and we’re going to have to be building multi-storey buildings, three, four, five-storey buildings. I don’t think it, personally, I think that’s an overbuild for that site,” he said.
Instead, Bohn believes developing a new hospital on a new site would allow Vanuatu to create a modern healthcare facility that could also support medical training.
“We could then possibly have the same space, working with our MOU with the National University, have the National University on site, and make it a teaching hospital,” he said.
The proposed teaching hospital would allow future doctors and health professionals to train in Vanuatu while providing specialised healthcare services.
Bohn said discussions around the future of the national hospital are still ongoing, but it remains one of his key priorities before the next national election.
“We need to have decisions regarding the hospital, whether we’re going to rebuild the site at VNH as it stands today, or whether we’re going to be allowed to have a greenfield space,” he said.
The Minister said he hopes planning and funding discussions will progress so the country can move forward with a long-term solution.
“I think that we really need to have that. We need to have the facilities available for dialysis, and we need to have the facilities available for the oncology unit and some other specialised medicine,” Bohn said.
