A ni-Vanuatu woman from Pentecost is bringing a new vessel to Vanuatu next week, with plans to begin operations in September to provide services to communities across the country.
Bethina Bulebanne, 48, who currently lives in New Caledonia, said her decision to purchase the vessel was driven by her love for the ocean, her family’s connection to the sea and her desire to contribute something to Vanuatu.
Bulebanne was born and raised in Fanafo, Santo, but her family originates from the coastal village of Bulhak in Central Pentecost.
She said her grandfather on her mother’s side was a fisherman who spent much of his time at sea in a canoe, which helped develop her strong connection to the ocean.
“I am 48 years old, so I thought it was about time to do something for my country,” she said.
“I love my country and I want to see it move forward and provide a service. If not now, then when should I do it?”
Bulebanne said she wanted to accomplish something meaningful during her lifetime and decided to invest in a vessel when she realised she could afford to purchase one.
The vessel, named LADY VAILLANT, is expected to arrive in Vanuatu next Wednesday or Thursday, with Luganville to serve as its home port.
According to Bulebanne, the vessel is expected to begin operating in the second week of September.
She explained that the name LADY VAILLANT represents “a strong lady in front of danger”, reflecting the strength and determination behind the investment.
Bulebanne also encouraged other ni-Vanuatu people to use their abilities and opportunities to contribute to their families, communities and country.
“If you can do something for your family, community or country now, then do it to justify your identity as a ni-Vanuatu,” she said.
She encouraged people to choose a field they are passionate about, saying this would help them succeed and remain comfortable when facing challenges.
Bulebanne also expressed appreciation to the people and families of Vanuatu for their support, saying the investment began as a personal lifelong challenge that she had set for herself.
“I never thought I would be in the media. It was a personal lifetime challenge and target that I set for myself, but now you guys have made it public and shown your appreciation,” she said.
She thanked the people of Vanuatu for their support and appreciation as she prepares to bring LADY VAILLANT home.
