The Saupia Health Centre and the North Efate Area Council will host World Nurses Day today, 12 May 2026, to honour and recognise the contribution of nurses serving communities across SHEFA Province.

The event will be held under the theme “Empowering Nurses through Government Decentralisation and Area Council Support”.

The celebration is inspired by the Ministry of Health’s SHEFA Maritime Health Concept, which aims to transform health service delivery in Shefa Province through decentralisation.

World Nurses Day provides an opportunity to acknowledge the dedication, resilience, and compassion of nurses who deliver essential health services to communities every day.

At the centre of this year’s celebration is a call to strengthen local support systems and empower nurses through effective decentralisation and collaborative governance. Chiefs and leaders from Area Councils in northern Efate, along with community representatives, will attend.

With government approval to upgrade Saupia Health Centre to SHEFA Provincial Hospital, a Career Pathway Talk will also be delivered to inspire young people in Shefa Province to consider careers in health care.

The SHEFA Provincial Health Office and the North Efate Area Council invite health workers, community leaders, youth representatives, and stakeholders to attend and show appreciation for nurses whose commitment continues to strengthen primary health care in Shefa.

“This event reflects our shared commitment and collective responsibility to support and empower nurses who form the foundation of our health system,” Assistant Nursing Services Manager Barry Saniel said.

The World Nurses Day celebration at Saupia Health Centre aims to encourage appreciation, dialogue, and renewed commitment among partners to invest in nurses as frontline caregivers and future leaders in health.
