In 2023, Sista partnered with CARE’s Young Women’s Leadership Program (YWLP) alumni to carry out a game changing project!

Funded by Ambassde De France, Sikmun Storian is a collection of stories that shares the experiences of Ni-Vanuatu women of all ages in both rural and urban settings to share their menstruation journeys with the goal of normalising discussions around menstruation, and empowering women and girls to speak openly about menstruation. This involves exploring the role that kastom plays when a girl begins this rite of passage into womanhood, to better understand cultural beliefs and dispel any misconceptions.

The booklet aims to provide a platform for women and girls to share their personal experiences, reflect on their menstruation journeys and prompt meaningful discussions amongst the wider community that will propel significant change about an often tabu topic. This project aims to open a new dialogue on menstrual health and hygiene management in Vanuatu that provides an alternative option to promote dignity and good practice in hygiene.

The planning of the collection of the stories commenced in April 2023 and was developed and printed in December 2023. Distribution of the booklets to all the women who took part in this project, was eventually made in January this year.

A big THANK YOU to the YWLP alumni for their leadership and contribution to this booklet, and a shout out to the wonderful women who provided that extra support to the young team of girls. And shout out to Ambassde De France for their generous support to fund this project – thank you!
