Team Vanuatu has secured its first medal at the Pacific Mini Games in Palau yesterday, claiming bronze in the women’s table tennis team event.

Despite facing the challenge of competing without a coach, the team delivered a remarkable performance, defeating Kiribati 3-1 in the quarter-finals before moving into the semi-finals, where they fell short but earned a place in the third-place playoff.

Led by Vanuatu’s veteran table tennis star, Anolyn Lulu, alongside Tracy Mawa and Marishan Bule, the team showed outstanding teamwork and determination to clinch the bronze medal.

Team Manager Carol Jiren expressed her pride in the players’ efforts. “I can’t express how proud I am of the team. They really did their best despite not having a coach. The win was worth it,” she said.

Anolyn Lulu, Vanuatu’s celebrated “Golden Mama”, echoed the sentiment, highlighting the resilience of the young team — including players experiencing international competition for the first time.

“We thank God for giving us the courage and determination to win this first medal for Vanuatu,” she said.

The men’s table tennis team also put on an impressive display, defeating Kiribati 3-0 in their quarter-final match. The squad, led by Olympian Yoshua Shing and supported by Ham Lulu, Edwin Lulu, and Ian Willie, advanced to the semi-finals after showcasing great skill and precision.

Lulu noted that the competition has been tough but said the team’s determination has kept their medal hopes alive.

“Playing against a strong Kiribati side was challenging, but our courage and focus helped us reach this stage,” she said.

Vanuatu now looks forward to adding more medals to its tally as the Games continue in Koror.
