Team Up, the Australian Government-supported sport for development program, has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting inclusion, equality, and leadership across the Pacific region, with a particular focus on Vanuatu.

Speaking as the Monitoring, Evaluation, Reporting, and Learning (MERL) Specialist, Valda Hoeder-Howard who was in Port Vila last week, highlighted the program’s key thematic areas: gender, disability, governance, leadership, and knowledge-sharing.

“Vanuatu is doing really well,” Hoeder-Howard said, commending the country’s progress and strong partnerships in delivering impactful community sports programs.

She added that while the future design of the program is still uncertain, there is optimism that Team Up may expand to support additional sporting federations as new opportunities arise.

Currently operating across seven countries, Team Up supports 70 programs through 35 partners in 15 different sports.

The program plays a pivotal role in fostering social inclusion and positive community change through sport.

In Fiji, there are six programs; nine in Papua New Guinea; four in Tonga; five in Samoa; one in Nauru; and six in Vanuatu.

In Vanuatu, Team Up collaborates with a diverse group of national sporting federations and organizations to implement targeted initiatives:

Football: Partners with the Just Play program, promoting inclusion and healthy lifestyles.

Hockey: Supports the Hook in for Health program, focusing on health education and gender equity.

Cricket: Drives gender empowerment initiatives through sport.

AFL (Australian Football League): Runs the Plei Footy Blong Jenis program, which supports gender inclusion.

Vanuatu Aquatics Federation: Implements the Swim, Splash and Survive program, focusing on both gender and disability inclusion.

Volleyball: Sponsors the Volley4Change initiative, encouraging female participation and leadership in sport.

Hoeder-Howard who was in Port Vila last week expressed gratitude for the strong collaboration with Vanuatu’s sporting bodies, saying, “It’s really good to be a partner with Vanuatu, and we’re thankful for the continued support in all six programs.”

While Team Up remains open to new bids and sponsorships, its guiding mission continues to center on fostering inclusive, sustainable, and community-driven sport development across the Pacific.

Future program designs will likely build upon this strong foundation, with potential expansion into new sports and partnerships depending on available opportunities.

Team Up is an initiative of the Australian Government aimed at advancing development goals through sport. The program works across the Pacific to create safe, inclusive, and empowering environments where everyone can thrive—on and off the field.
