Sista has always enjoyed using storytelling and conversation to create space for people in Vanuatu to openly discuss some of the issues shaping our communities.

Through The Round Table Podcast, a monthly video podcast hosted by Sista Director Yasmine Covo, six guests brought their experiences, ideas and perspectives to conversations about politics, health, parenting, entrepreneurship, education, masculinity, faith and the challenges facing young people. The podcast ran from November 2025 to May 2026.

Produced with funding support from the Pacific Media Assistance Scheme (PACMAS) and technical support from Wan Nambanga, the podcast was created to encourage meaningful conversations around issues that affect everyday life in Vanuatu. Each episode also included street interviews, giving people in Port Vila an opportunity to share their thoughts and experiences on the different topics discussed.

Six Episodes, Six Conversations

The series opened with Markson Taiki, owner of MATAKAMBU, creative and media industry professional, who spoke about the realities of Vanuatu’s music and creative industries. The conversation explored the opportunities and challenges facing local artists, the influence of overseas musicians, event production, and the role social media can play in both supporting and criticising creatives. It also raised questions about how we can encourage more constructive conversations online. Watch the FULL Episode and check out what the people had to say about this topic!

Episode Two featured Josepheen Tarianga, Sista’s Program Manager and former journalist, for a wide-ranging discussion on public transport, political accountability and women’s livelihoods. The conversation looked at the proposed increase in bus fares, the quality of public transport services and the possibility of introducing meters. It also explored questions around corruption, accountability and the “big man mindset”, before turning to the controversial Shefa Provincial Government Council by-law that restricted women from selling food during menstruation. The discussion highlighted how such restrictions can directly affect women’s ability to earn an income and support their families. In Episode Three, medical doctor Dr Sale Vurobaravu brought health to The Round Table. He encouraged listeners to think about health as more than simply the absence of illness, and spoke about everyday choices that can have a long-term impact on our wellbeing. Food, physical activity, sleep and kava were among the topics discussed, with a focus on making realistic, practical changes rather than looking for extreme solutions. The conversation also highlighted the importance of supporting local markets and making healthier choices using locally available foods. Episode Four shifted the conversation towards parenting and mental health with Groovy Banana co-founder Gaelle Meheut, also known as Gaga. In an open and honest discussion, Gaga reflected on her own experiences with parenting, stress and reaching a point of burnout. The conversation examined violence against children, how children’s behaviour can be understood as a form of communication, and the importance of building healthier relationships between parents and children. It also explored gender roles, culture and tradition, homeschooling and the challenges parents face in navigating smartphones and online content. For Episode Five, photographer and filmmaker Niki joined Yasmine to talk about entrepreneurship, education and mindset. His story offered insight into building a creative career in Vanuatu, beginning with limited resources and growing through persistence, practical experience and a commitment to storytelling. The conversation challenged narrow ideas about what a “good job” looks like and explored financial literacy, entrepreneurship, education and the importance of creating opportunities locally. It also highlighted the resilience needed to continue pursuing an idea or career when support is not always readily available. The final episode brought Williamson Emmanuel Kalpokas, a communications specialist and graphic designer from Lelepa Island, to the table to discuss young men, masculinity, faith and social media. The conversation explored how peer influence and online spaces can shape young men’s attitudes and behaviour, including the growing influence of the manosphere. Williamson also spoke about relationships, personal responsibility, boundaries, faith and the need for men to support one another without putting others down. The discussion ended by looking at opportunities for young men through technology, artificial intelligence and leadership, while emphasising the importance of values and accountability. Across the six episodes, The Round Table Podcast created a space for conversations that are often difficult, uncomfortable or overlooked.

Instead of providing simple answers through discussion, they encouraged listeners to question, reflect and consider different perspectives on issues affecting individuals, families and communities. From the cost and quality of public transport to women’s economic participation, healthy lifestyles, parenting, education, creative careers and the experiences of young men, the series demonstrated the value of bringing different voices together around the same table.

The inclusion of street interviews also helped broaden each conversation beyond the guest and host, bringing in perspectives from people in the community and reminding us that these issues are not abstract. They are part of everyday life.

For Sista, the podcast is another way of using media and storytelling as tools for advocacy and connection. By creating an informal and accessible platform for dialogue, The Round Table Podcast supports Sista’s broader work to encourage people to speak up, question harmful ideas and engage with issues that matter.

Most importantly, the series reminds us that meaningful change can begin with something as simple as creating a space where people feel able to talk, listen and ask questions.

THANK YOU to all of our guests who featured on this Podcast, Wan Nambanga for technical support, Laura McAuliffe for her techinical expertise on communications and media, and PACMAS for generously supporting Sista to bring The Round Table Podcast to life.
