The Vanuatu Association of Non-Governmental Organisations (VANGO) recognised eleven of the country’s most active NGOs and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) for their contributions to community development during the NGO Day celebration.

VANGO Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Shirley Abraham said one of the organisation’s priorities is to strengthen the work of civil society in Vanuatu, particularly through digital capacity building and good governance. She explained that the NGO sector includes international NGOs, national NGOs, and Community-Based Organisations (CBOs). Through mapping and assessment exercises, VANGO found that around 80 percent of civil society groups operating in the country are CBOs. Many of these groups face challenges in ensuring proper governance structures and institutional support to guide their work within different policy and operational frameworks.

CEO Abraham acknowledged that many people working in these organisations—especially mothers and community volunteers—sacrifice their own time, resources, and even personal funds to support community development. This reality drives VANGO’s efforts to support CSOs, particularly CBOs that require resources and capacity-building assistance to deliver their programmes effectively. VANGO has been working with donor partners and sponsors to mobilise support, including digital tools to strengthen administration and operations.

A total of eleven awards were presented this year, recognising both organisational and individual contributions. In addition to the awards, laptops were distributed to selected NGOs shortlisted through an application process. Most recipients were community-based organisations, and the laptops—sponsored by TitanFX—are intended to improve administrative systems, governance practices, and programme implementation, particularly in Port Vila.

Organisational awards included the Inspirational Community-Based Organisation Award, given to the Silae Vanua Market Vendors Association; the Standout National NGO Award, presented to Youth Challenge Vanuatu; and the Impactful International NGO Award, awarded to World Vision. Individual awards included the Long Outstanding Service Award presented to Lai Sakita, the Inspirational Leader Award to Willie Missak, and the Outstanding Performance and Enthusiasm Award to Esther Belden. Three recipients received the CSO Women’s Leadership Award: Alice Kaloran, Jane Iatika, and Serah Ligo. The Human Rights Activism Award recognised Jenny Ligo and Anne Pakoa for their continued work in promoting human rights across Vanuatu.

All awards were presented on 27 November 2025 during Vanuatu NGO Day, sponsored by Balance of Power with support from Australian Aid.
