The Vanuatu Tennis Federation is setting its sights on further improvement after an impressive third-place finish at the recent Oceania Pacific Junior Championships (POJC) held in Fiji.

Competing against 14 nations from across the Pacific, Vanuatu delivered one of its strongest performances to date, finishing behind American Samoa in first place and Papua New Guinea in second.

A highlight of the tournament came in the Under-12 team event, where Vanuatu claimed the championship title after defeating Tahiti in the final.

The country also recorded notable individual and doubles results. In the Under-14 boys’ doubles, Regmountfield Aka and Jayden Tyler Lister secured second place.

In the girls’ division, Caroline Andrew placed third in the Under-16 singles, before teaming up with Colita Hakena to win the Under-16 doubles title.

Coach Lorraine Banimatuku praised the team’s steady progress, noting a clear upward trajectory in recent years. Vanuatu finished fifth in last year’s competition and ninth the year before, highlighting the impact of improved training programs.

“We’ve seen a lot of improvement through our weekly training programs at the tennis centres,” she said.

“The players are developing well, and we want to continue building on this in the coming years.”

Team selections are based on performances at regional events, including the Pacific Oceania Regional Championships, and the federation is now focused on expanding its talent pool.

Banimatuku emphasized the importance of increasing participation, particularly through stronger engagement with schools.

“The more players we have competing, the more points we can accumulate in regional competitions,” she said.

“Like all federations, we aim to be the best we can and achieve the best possible results.”

Team official Kaycee Nimoho also highlighted the value of the experience for the young athletes.

“The exposure was very important for the players,” she said. “They’ve shown they can compete with some of the best in the region.”

With momentum building, the Vanuatu Tennis Federation is now aiming even higher, with ambitions of one day claiming the Pacific Junior Championship title.
