Vanuatu senior women’s football team will face Solomon Island for third place at the MSG PM Cup, after their 3-1 defeat to Fiji.

Vanuatu entered the first half as an improved side yesterday at the Port Moresby’s Sir John Guise Stadium, after their 4-0 defeat to PNG. The girls in yellow dominated possession, had more shots on goal but failed to convert.

The Vanuatu defense managed to keep Fiji scoreless through the first 45 minutes. However, Fiji bounced back in the second, gaining more confidence.

Sereana Naweni broke the deadlock just seconds into the second half, giving Fiji a 1-0 lead. This gave them the momentum they needed, pushing them to  take control of the game and put pressure on Vanuatu.

The Fijian side managed to break into the Vanuatu defense more easily, unlike in the first half. Vanuatu missed a few golden opportunities, as they struggled to convert their chances

A build-up between the girls in white in the 69th minute led to their second goal by Naiela Leba. The Vanuatu goalkeeper rushed out to collect the ball but missed, allowing Leba to kick it into the net.

Despite being 2 -0 down, Vanuatu continues to apply pressure. Captain Leitamate Simon unleashed a long shot from outside the 19-yard box in the 70th minute, sending the crowd into cheers.

The Vanuatu side tends to push forward quickly once they win possession, but often struggle with poor finishing. A draw added time set up Fijis third goal, making it impossible for Vanuatu to mount a comeback.

Fiji will now face the hosts in the grand-final on Sunday, while Vanuatu will play Solomon Islands who lost to PNG 5-0 yesterday.
