Chairman of the Vanuatu Electoral Commission (VEC) Edward Kaltamat has called upon all eligible voters to come out and exercise their right to choose their leaders in the 2025 Snap Election today, 16 January 2025.
“As we stand on the brink of a pivotal moment in our nation’s history, I want to take a moment to remind all voters of the incredible opportunity that is before us on January 16, 2025.
“This election is not just a public holiday; it is a chance for each and every one of us to shape the future of our great nation” he said in a statement issued to media.
The Chairman said that the choices which the voters make will echo for generations to come.
“We have the power to decide the direction of our beloved Vanuatu, to build upon the foundation laid by those who came before us, and to ensure that our children inherit a nation that is stronger, and more resilient,” he said.
Elaborating the preparations for this election, Mr. Kaltamat highlighted the challenges faced by the VEC and Vanuatu Electoral Office (VEO) due to short preparation period and aftermath of the earthquake.
However, despite these challenges all arrangements have been completed thanks to the tireless efforts of VEO, other government departments and our valued international development partners.
“The earthquake of 17 December 2024 was one of the largest earthquakes we have seen in many years,” he said.
“Although we in Vanuatu are no strangers to challenge, we have faced floods and landslides that tested our resolve and cyclones that threatened our shelter, our water, and our livelihoods. But we in Vanuatu are known for our resilience, our ability to turn to one another and support each other.
“It is in these moments of hardship that we show our joyous spirit, and our capacity for resilience as the happiest country in the world.”
The Chairman said every single vote matters and every single vote counts.
“Your voice matters. When you cast your ballot, you are not just participating in a process; you are making a statement about the kind of future you want for yourself, your family, and your community,” he added.
He appealed to the voters to not let this opportunity pass by without exercising their right to vote.
“On January 16, 2025, let us come together as one people, united in purpose and vision,” he urged.
“Let us honor the sacrifices of those who fought for our independence by actively participating in our democracy. Let us show the world that Vanuatu is a nation that believes in its potential, a nation that is ready to embrace the future with intention and hope.
“Let us seize this opportunity. Let us vote. Let us shape the future of our great nation.”
