A former national team manager for the Pacific Mini Games, Relvie Poilapa, said women are often disregarded and criticized but have the tendency of having a strong winning mindset than men.

The former Hockey Federation president who has helped her team participate in past Games said Vanuatu women are focused, competitive and natural athletes that possess a winning and positive spirit when challenged.

Poilapa made these remarks after results from the Pacific Mini Games in Palau showed that the majority of Vanuatu’s medals were won by female athletes including all the gold medals were gained by the women category.

“This is why our women always bring home medals in regional and international tournaments,” she said referring to past medals and the ongoing mini games where the nation’s top female athletes like Anolyn Lulu and the beach volleyball girls and the young female judokas who are bringing home gold medals.

She also referred to other sports disciplines like cricket who are currently putting Vanuatu on the map with their high level of participation in the world and their impressive wins, noting that those are just some of the vivid examples of how valuable women are in the sports industry.

Citing no offense to the men in sports, she said Ni-Vanuatu women are more likely to succeed when encouraged, uplifted and supportive towards each other and when coached in the right way.

“I speak this as a former high school captain, team player a national team manager, and technical official in the field of play for the sport that I have played and loved since I was a teenager.

“Our women have a driving force that makes them outstanding athletes. So, Vanuatu the nation where men most especially like to criticize from the sidelines, I suggest they stop with the negativity and come to realize that women do contribute to the nation,” she said.

She encouraged all women and girls to keep up the fighting spirit and move forward as they are the ones with raw natural talent rather than men.
