On 16 October 2025, CARE in Vanuatu and Sista hosted an Intergenerational Dialogue on “The Importance of Supporting Women in Business” in Lenakel, Tanna. The event brought together 12 participants from the Young Women’s Leadership Program (YWLP) and Young Men’s Program alumni to explore women’s economic participation, entrepreneurship, and the important role of men as allies in creating supportive environments for women in business.

The dialogue featured local business and community leaders Sylvana Kampum from Tanna Food Co. and Daniel Josaia from Nasituan, with moderation by Rosina Kaimbang Lore, Sista’s Project Coordinator. The session created a space for participants to share experiences, discuss challenges, and reflect on how families, communities, and institutions can better support women’s leadership and business aspirations.

The discussion highlighted the many contributions women make to businesses and local economies, while recognising the barriers they continue to face, including cultural expectations, limited access to education and financial resources, balancing family responsibilities, and challenges in being recognised as leaders in business spaces.

Key messages from the dialogue included:

  • Women’s businesses thrive when they have support systems, including encouragement from partners, families, communities, and organisations.
  • Men play an important role as allies by listening to women’s ideas, respecting women’s leadership, and creating inclusive spaces where women can succeed.
  • Mentorship and sharing experiences are essential in helping young women build confidence and develop business skills.
  • Women bring valuable leadership strengths, including strong management skills, creativity, collaboration, and attention to detail.
  • Small ideas can grow into successful businesses when people have access to knowledge, training, resources, and support.

Panelists shared personal stories of entrepreneurship and leadership. Sylvana spoke about her journey managing finance and reservations at Tanna Food Co., the importance of family support, and the challenges young women can face when taking on leadership roles. Daniel shared examples of successful women entrepreneurs supported through Nasituan and emphasised that women are often the “roots” behind many successful businesses, providing the unseen work that helps communities and families grow.

The dialogue also encouraged participants to strengthen their communication, financial management, and entrepreneurship skills while recognising the importance of stepping forward with confidence and seeking guidance from mentors and successful business leaders.

Participants reflected positively on the session, noting that it increased their understanding of women’s economic contributions and inspired them to consider business opportunities. Many highlighted the value of involving both young women and men in future discussions to continue building shared responsibility for gender equality.

The event reinforced CARE and Sista’s commitment to promoting gender equality by strengthening partnerships between women and men and creating opportunities for young people to become champions for inclusive leadership and economic empowerment in their communities.
