On 17 April 2025, CARE in Vanuatu and Sista hosted an Intergenerational Dialogue on Women in Leadership as part of the Young Women’s Leadership Program (YWLP) Port Vila 2025 Cohort. The event brought together 19 emerging young women leaders and experienced women leaders to explore the importance of mentorship, resilience, and collective action in advancing women’s leadership in Vanuatu.
The dialogue featured inspiring women leaders including Georgilla Worwor (YWLP alumna and VNYC Policy Research and Advocacy Coordinator), Vomboe Molly Shem (Operations Manager at World Vision), and Rosina Kaimbang Lore (Sista Project Coordinator), with facilitation by Josepheen Tarianga (Sista Program Manager).
The discussion focused on the challenges women face when entering leadership spaces, including gender stereotypes, cultural expectations, balancing family responsibilities, and limited support systems. Panelists shared their personal leadership journeys and highlighted how resilience, confidence, advocacy, and supportive networks helped them overcome barriers and create opportunities for other women.
Key messages from the dialogue included the importance of:
- Building strong mentorship and support networks for emerging women leaders.
- Speaking up and advocating for change, even when challenging social expectations.
- Recognising culture as both a challenge and an opportunity to promote inclusive leadership.
- Valuing women’s leadership strengths, including collaboration, empathy, attention to detail, and community-focused decision-making.
The event created a meaningful space for intergenerational learning, allowing young women to connect with role models, gain inspiration, and reflect on their own leadership potential. Participants shared positive reflections, noting the value of hearing real experiences from women leaders and the encouragement to continue developing their confidence and skills.
The activity reinforced CARE and Sista’s commitment to strengthening women’s leadership and advancing gender equality by connecting emerging leaders with experienced mentors and champions for change.
