A new women-led community kitchen aimed at strengthening food security and disaster preparedness has opened in Lamap, MALAMPA Province.
The Dorosday Komuniti Kitjin was launched on 17 April as part of a local initiative led by the Women I TokTok Tugeta (WITTT) network, with support from ActionAid and funding from the German Embassy in Canberra.
The kitchen is named in honour of the late Dorosday Kenneth, one of Vanuatu’s longest serving female senior public servants. Ms Kenneth was a former Director General of the Ministry of Justice and Community Services, a former Director of the Department of Women’s Affairs, and a key contributor to the establishment of the WITTT network. She is remembered for her work in advancing gender equality and supporting women’s empowerment in Vanuatu.
The facility is designed to support vulnerable community members, particularly women and persons with disabilities, who are often most affected during climate-related disasters.
It will serve multiple roles, as a community kitchen, a safe space, and an evacuation centre during emergencies.
Women involved in the project will also establish a community garden to supply organic food and build a local food bank, helping ensure access to nutrition during and after crises.
Beyond food provision, the centre will provide a space for women to come together to develop recovery strategies, address issues such as violence against women, and strengthen social and economic resilience within the community.
Flora Vano, Country Manager of ActionAid Vanuatu, described the opening as an important milestone for the women of Lamap.
She said the initiative will improve access to food for families affected by disasters, strengthen preparedness, and provide a safe environment where women can support each other.
German Ambassador to Vanuatu Beate Grzeski welcomed the initiative, describing the importance of women’s leadership in building resilience at community level.
She said Germany is proud to support the WITTT network in establishing a facility that improves food security, promotes women’s empowerment, and supports disaster readiness in MALAMPA Province.
Organisers said the Dorosday Komuniti Kitjin reflects growing recognition of the role women play in leading local responses to climate change and humanitarian challenges.
