Port Vila Member of Parliament (MP) Marie Louise Milne has extended Mother’s Day wishes to mothers across Vanuatu, acknowledging their sacrifices and their role in families and the nation.

The only woman MP in the country’s 14th Legislature, MP Milne delivered a message ahead of Mother’s Day celebrations this Sunday.

“As a mother and as the only woman MP in this Parliament, I want to wish every woman around our archipelago, from Torres to Aneityum, a Happy Mother’s Day,” Milne said.

She described mothers as the backbone of homes and communities, saying their contribution is vital to the future of the country.

“Partners, cherish your wives. They are the backbone of the home and our nation. Without mothers, we would not have generations,” she said.

Milne also called on children and families to honour and appreciate their mothers, pointing to the sacrifices women make in raising children.

“Children, cherish your mothers because mothers are a creation of God that is so precious,” she said. “A mother gives life to you. She carried you for nine months and sacrificed herself to give you the life you enjoy today.”

The MP encouraged people living away from their mothers not to forget them during Mother’s Day.

“If your mother is far away, call her. Take your phone and call her. If you are near, visit her,” she said. “Life is short and you only have one mother.”

Milne ended her message by wishing all mothers across Vanuatu a joyful and peaceful Mother’s Day.

“To every lovely mother around Vanuatu, Happy Mother’s Day again,” she said.
