March has been full of collaboration, meeting new people, and recognising the power of collective voices.

From building up women’s leadership and representation to strengthening Sista’s internal processes and resilience, March reminded us of the power of welcoming in new people to the work we do, and how this can help grow Sista’s reach.

Sista’s work on eliminating gender-based violence and harmful gender stereotypes

This month, Sista’s Program manager and Community and Advocacy Manager had the opportunity to sit down with Diana from the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) to review a regional WASH report developed by the university. The report included findings and reflections relating to Vanuatu. During the meeting, the team provided additional context, clarified information, and verified key details to ensure the Vanuatu sections accurately reflected local realities and experiences. These types of projects are vital to the development of reporting and analysis on harmful gender stereotypes. Sista is proud to contribute to developing stronger structures and reporting mechanisms that accurately depict the experiences of women throughout Vanuatu.

Also this month, from 9-31 March, the Alliance Française de Port Vila held an exhibition in honour of International Women’s Day. It celebrated creativity, resilience, and the contributions of women in Vanuatu. Bringing together artists, community members, and supporters this exhibition fostered conversations and reflections on women’s rights and gender equality through art and storytelling. It was an incredible display of local talent, touching on subjects that are often not depicted from these points of view. We love seeing local ni-Vanuatu women share their stories through art and appreciate the Alliance Française for hosting this event.

Sista’s work on advancing women’s leadership and representation

On 10 March, Sista’s Executive Director, Yasmine Covo, was awarded the Hanson Mataskelekele Award as part of the International Women’s Day Awards Ceremony hosted by the Australian High Commission, Vanuatu. This award recognises Yasmine’s leadership, both in Sista and the wider women’s movement in Vanuatu.

Those who know Yasmine know that she is committed, passionate, and unapologetically present in every space she enters.  This moment is not only a win for Yasmine, but for the entire Sista team, and the continuing work of the Women’s Movement throughout Vanuatu.

On 18 March, Sista’s Executive Director and Program Manager met with Stephanie Pflugfelder as part of Melanesian Women Today. She stopped in for a visit at the Sista office to talk about the exciting work she is looking to do here in education and to share the news of the exciting launch of the Kalja Magazine.

Sista and Melanesian Women Today have worked together to create the space for the Melanesian Sisterhood Creed and as part of Haus Storian in the 2023 Melanesian Arts Festival and the two are always glad to work together as organisations amplifying the voices of Women.

Throughout the month, the project team conducted a desk review of practical and locally relevant resources inform the development of the upcoming booklet to support disaster preparedness, response, and recovery. This booklet will centre the stories of women and highlight their role in disaster preparedness, response, and recovery. Following this desk review, the Project Coordinator began drafting the booklet, collating relevant information from partners working in this sector and compiling them in an accessible way for communities and families to be more prepared for whatever disasters we may face.

The team also met with the ProMedical Chief Executive Officer, Jeff Mabbet, to talk about partnering together for this exciting project. ProMedical shared some of their experiences during disasters and how this resource can support their work as an emergency service in times of disaster. They will be helping collect stories for the booklet and providing some Basic First Aid knowledge that all people need.

Further, as Sista’s Project Coordinator is a member of the Access to Justice Steering Committee, led by the Supreme Court, she supported coordination of communications regarding the project logo between the Steering Committee and Sista’s Communications team. The team finalized the logo by the end of March. The Supreme Court, the Steering Committee, and the Project Officer acknowledged Sista for its contributions to this work.

Sista’s work on strengthening the feminist movement in Vanuatu and the Pacific to progress gender equality

Sista’s Executive Director, Yasmine had the privilege of meeting with Ms. Alison Davidian, the UN Women Representative for the Pacific, early in March. Ms. Davidian was in Port Vila, from 2-6 March, this being her inaugural visit to Vanuatu since taking up her position. Her visit forms part of UN Women’s continued engagement to support national stakeholders in strengthening gender-responsive governance systems, social norms change initiatives and survivor-centred essential services and Sista was glad to be part of the discussion.

Yasmine was also involved in multiple discussions across civil society and government, getting to meet with Geoff Kalsrap and Malgorzata Wisiniewska from the Vanuatu Electoral Environment Project, to discuss gender, civics and voting in Vanuatu. As well as attending the launch of the Vanuatu Women’s Centre’s 2nd Prevalence Study on Women’s Lives and Family Relationships on the 9th of March. This important survey provides vital evidence that helps us understand where progress has been made, where challenges remain, and where interventions have been most effective.

Sista’s Program Manager, Josepheen took part in the Vanuatu Women’s Festival working group this month. At Jill’s Cafe, they gathered for a late International Women’s Day Celebration and to review the Festival’s Call to Action. The Call to Action set out several action points across four priorities. The working group gathered to ensure the actions in the call to Action reflected the discussions had at the VWF and that they carried the appropriate urgency with which they were shared.  The group also discussed the way forward with the Call to Action, how to approach partners in its implementation and setting up the Women’s Network.

Throughout the month, Josepheen supported the development of a revised concept note for establishing a National Women’s Network in Vanuatu, contributing to drafting content focused on strengthening coordination, collaboration, and collective action across the women’s movement.

Sista’s work on building a resilient, locally-led, feminist organisation

Sista is always working to make sure our organisation is strong and prepared for anything. This month Sista has been working to strengthen our internal policies and procedures. Sista shortlisted two HR consultants and held meetings to discuss the organisation’s needs regarding the review of internal policies and procedures. The aim of this process was to ensure policies are practical and relevant for a small organisation while also meeting compliance requirements. We are pleased to have selected a consultant and are excited to begin this new journey, which will support Sista in strengthening the practical use and implementation of policies across the team.

Announcements and Media

This month, the Sista podcast team recorded two new Round Table Podcast episodes.

Episode 4 featured a conversation with Gaelle Mehuet (a.k.a. Gaga), unpacking healthy and unhealthy ways of disciplining children, women’s access and participation in nakamals, and what “home schooling” could look like for children.

Episode 5 was an engaging conversation with Niki Kuautonga on entrepreneurship, the importance of staying committed long enough for people to recognize your work, and practical advice on how to pursue your dreams.
