
Thirty-five more candidates have been declared qualified to run the Snap Election next week, after sorting out their government debts over the weekend.
Their names were announced by the Electoral Commission on Monday.
They include prominent politicians like Sato Kilman of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Joe Natuman of Vanua’aku Pati (VP), the former Leader of Opposition Gracia Shadrack (Rural Development Party), Gloria Julia King from the Union of Moderate Parties (UMP) and Samuel Kalpoilep Andrew (Traditional Governance Party).
The constituencies of Torres, Banks, Paama, Ambrym, Epi and South Islands have one extra candidate each, Ambae has two, Tanna and Santo have three each, Port Vila has seven, Efate Rural has six, and Malekula has eight.
With the added candidates, the total number running in the Snap Election now exceeds 200. Less than 10 are female, and over 30 are independent.
The Port Vila Constituency now has 32 candidates competing for five seats, including Members of Parliament (MPs) Ralph Regenvanu of the Graon mo Jastis Pati (GJP), Ishmael Kalsakau and Harry Anthony Iaris from UMP, all aiming to retain their seats from the previous legislature.
Twenty-two candidates will compete for five seats in Efate Rural, with UMP fielding three candidates: Jesse Luo, Jean Baptist Tama, and Mrs. King.
Another 20 candidates are running for four seats in Pentecost, the constituency of former Prime Minister Charlot Salwai of the Reunification Movement for Change (RMC). Both RMC and the Rural Development Party (RDP) have fielded three candidates each, while the National United Party (NUP) and Leaders Party of Vanuatu (LPV) have two each.
In Santo, 27 candidates are vying for seven seats. Former Police Commissioner Robson Iavro has resigned to run, joining four other VP candidates.
They are competing against RMC’s former Ministers Rick Tchamako Mahe and Samson Samsen, along with politicians like Gaetan Pikioune, Pikioune Joshua, Ronald Warsal, Hosea Nevu, Sakaes Lulu, Alfred Maoh, and Camilo Ati.
Former ministers of Foreign Affairs Matai Seremaiah and Public Works Marc Ati are two of six candidates running for the six seats in Luganville.
Former MP Don Ken is one of five independent candidates in Malekula. PPP has Sato Kilman and Sanick Asang, RDP has Gracia Shadrack and Micha Oliver, VP has Esmon Saimon and two others, and UMP has Hymak Anatole and Marcellino Barthelemy. RMC also has a candidate.
Four former ministers are campaigning to regain their seats on Tanna: VP’s Johnny Koanapo, Simil Johnson, Iauko Group’s Harry Xavier Emanuel, and GJP’s Andrew Napuat. VP and UMP have fielded more candidates, while RMC and LPV have two each, and GJP has one.
The former Director General of the Sports Ministry, Russel Tamata, has resigned to contest the single seat in the Malo/Aore Constituency, joining four other candidates.
Howard Aru also resigned as the Chief Executive Officer at the Vanuatu Chamber of Commerce and Industry to contest under VP in Ambae.
The former Health Minister John Still Tari Qetu from the National United Party and former MPs James Bule from People’s Unity Development Party and RDP’s Jay Ngwele are also running, with a female candidate Nadia Kanegai.
Former Speaker Seule Simeon will compete against four candidates from the Progressive Development Party (VPDP) and UMP to maintain one of the two seats on Epi.
There is also a female candidate from Oyoramada Muvmen.
GJP’s former Minister of Climate Change, John Salong, will try to secure one of the two seats in Ambrym again. Six candidates will compete for one seat in Tongoa, while seven will vie for one seat in the Shepherds Constituency.
Three candidates will compete for one seat in the Southern Islands.
Voters nationwide will go to the polls next Thursday for the parliamentary election, with the Port Vila Northern Ward By-Election taking place on the same day.
