The Supreme Court of Vanuatu has sentenced a 64-year-old man to three years and six months’ imprisonment after he admitted to sexual offences against his young granddaughters.

In Public Prosecutor v Taun [2026] VUSC 82, Justice Oliver Saksak handed down the sentence in the Supreme Court in Port Vila following the defendant’s guilty plea.

Judah John Taun pleaded guilty to three counts of acts of indecency involving two girls under the age of 15, and one count of attempted unlawful sexual intercourse. The offences occurred between 2024 and 2025.

The court heard that Taun, who was entrusted with the care of his granddaughters while their mother was away, repeatedly exposed himself and engaged in indecent acts in their presence. In August 2025, the offending escalated further.

Justice Saksak described the case as involving a serious breach of trust, noting that the offences took place in locations where the children should have felt safe, including their home and garden. He also highlighted the significant age gap between the offender and the victims, the repeated nature of the offending, and the lasting psychological harm caused. The court found no mitigating factors relating to the offending itself but acknowledged Taun’s guilty plea, expressions of remorse, customary reconciliation, and lack of prior convictions.

An initial total sentence of seven years’ imprisonment was imposed, combining concurrent sentences for the indecency charges and a consecutive term for the attempted sexual offence. This was reduced to three years and six months after deductions for the guilty plea and personal mitigating factors.

Justice Saksak ordered that the sentence take immediate effect and be backdated to 3 October 2025, when Taun was first remanded in custody.
