16-year-old Anna Griffin from the Port Vila International School (PVIS) clinched the gold medal in the U16 girls long jump event at the National Athletics Championship yesterday.

Griffin leapt an impressive 4.36 meters, topping a field of eight competitors in the track and field event.

Her performance drew praise from Athletics Vanuatu Sports Development Officer (SDO) Keven Paul, who believes Griffin has the potential to break the national record of 6.9 meters if she continues to develop her technique and strength with a good coach.

“Anna has incredible potential,” said Paul. “With her current skill level, she’s not far from reaching record-breaking distances. She just needs the right training and support.”

Taking the silver medal was 14-year-old Vayana Mahe from Lycee LAB with a solid 4.10-meter jump.

Meanwhile, Rose Joy from Mele secured the bronze medal with a 3.94-meter leap.

All competitors were given three attempts, representing schools including Lycee LAB, Mele, Saint Joseph, Life Changer, and Onesua Presbyterian College.

The National Athletics Championship, held at Port Vila’s Korman Stadium, is in its second year and has attracted participation from schools across Port Vila as well as other provinces such as Sanma, Penama, and Tafea.

SDO Paul thanked all athletes and schools for their participation and enthusiasm, noting that the first day of the two-day event saw excellent turnout and favorable weather.

“It’s great to see the students not just showing up but competing seriously. The level of competition is rising,” Paul added.

“I’m proud of everyone’s efforts and I look forward to an exciting final day today.”

The championship continues today with more track and field events.
