On Thursday 21st September, Capitol FM107’s EmPawa Hour show focused on International Day of Peace, observed each year around the world on the 21 September.
The theme for 2017 is “Together for Peace: Respect, Safety and Dignity for All” and featured Anne Pakoa from the Vanuatu Human Rights Coalition with host Faithy leading the discussions. Relvie Poilapa, Van2017, briefly tuned in at the end and we were also fortunate to have Former NZ All Blacks Rugby legend Byron Kelleher, who is currently in Vanuatu, to provide his insights on how women play a powerful force in promoting Peace through sport.
Anne talked about what work is being done in Vanuatu to promote and advocate for this basic human right. She shared how ‘security’ means different things to different people. To celebrate International Peace Day, The Vanuatu Human Rights Coalition and Vanuatu Young Women for Change hosted an event at the Vanuatu Cultural Center Conference room.
The focus of the event was to localize UNSCR 1325 for Vanuatu and draw on the proposed advocacy strategies to achieve gender equality through a traditional Peace Building Architecture with the support of local chiefs. A ‘Toktok insaed long Nakamal’ was the proposed platform for local conflict resolutions and the promotion of Peace and Security for Vanuatu Women and Girls. It was sponsored by FemLINKPacific and GPPAC.
