In her first official address as Port Vila City Council’s (PVCC) first female Mayor yesterday, Jenny Regenvanu, urged national leaders to respect PVCC as an authority with its own laws, regulations, and decision-making power over Port Vila.
“Today’s council must ensure that we follow the law and take Port Vila forward,” she said.
She also urged all councillors, clerks, management and staff of PVCC to work together transparently and in accordance with the law at all times.
The Graon mo Jastis Pati (GJP) mayor from the Southern Ward pledged to give her best effort during the next two years of her tenure.
She said her council will work with the private sector to find ways to assist the city’s development and beautification.
“We will work with the national government to make Port Vila a safer city, and to improve our infrastructure, including roads, footpaths, drainage, street lighting, and signage,” she said.
“We want PVCC to become financially strong and sustainable, providing the best services to the residents of Port Vila. I appeal to all residents of Port Vila to cooperate with the council.
“Together, we must elevate Port Vila city to a new level, with higher standards and a cleaner environment. We want all residents to be proud of our city and to be recognized as a happiest city.”
She acknowledged the former mayor, Steve Kiel, on his past leadership.
The Acting Director General (DG) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MoIA), Jeffrey Trief, on behalf of the minister congratulated the lady mayor and the deputy mayor, Marie Louise Milne on their election.
He encouraged all councillors to collaborate for the collective benefit of the council, residents, and businesses, despite the challenges.
Regenvanu was elected in the second round of voting last Friday, with only 12 councillors present due to two councillors walking out. There were two nominations, and Regenvanu received 7 votes, while councillor Albert Sandy received 5 votes.
Legal advice was sought from the Office of the Attorney General regarding the election outcome, specifically whether the candidate who received 7 votes is deemed successful.
Regenvanu was declared the mayor following the legal advice received yesterday. Her election marks her as the first female to lead the council. She now serves as the 19th mayor of PVCC.
Green Confederation Councillor Marie Louise Milne from the Freswota/Tassiriki Ward was elected unopposed as the deputy mayor. This is not her first time holding the position. She served as the deputy lady mayor during the term of the former mayor Kiel.
