First-Ni-Vanuatu-woman-to-graduate-from-World-Maritime-University

Vanuatu marked a historic milestone as it celebrated the graduation of its first female from the World Maritime University (WMU) in Sweden.

Mrs. Seiloni Akanete Toakuru, a German government-sponsored fellow, graduated alongside over 260 other maritime professionals from more than 70 member states of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Her achievement is significant as it marks a major step forward for women in Vanuatu, and in the maritime industry at large. Toakuru, a highly experienced maritime professional, has been an active member of the maritime administration in Vanuatu and Tonga for over a decade, contributing to policy and compliance in the sector.

Her educational background includes a Master of Maritime Studies from the University of Wollongong, Australia, followed by a Master in Maritime Affairs specializing in Maritime Law and Policy.

Her graduation from WMU, which she describes as a “dream realized,” underscores the support she has received from key figures within the Vanuatu Government and the maritime sector. She expressed her gratitude to individuals such as the Commissioner of Maritime Affairs, Less Napuati, Director General(DG)of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Public Utilities (MIPU) Johnson Binaru, Reserve Bank Governor and former Finance DG, Letlet August. Their guidance and encouragement played a crucial role in helping her achieve this career milestone.

With her expertise, Toakuru is a valuable asset to the Vanuatu maritime sector. Before her studies at WMU, she held managerial roles at the Vanuatu Maritime Safety Authority (VMSA) and currently serves as the Acting/Deputy Commissioner International.

As Vanuatu’s first female graduate from WMU, Toakuru’s success is not only a personal triumph but also a trailblazing moment for women in Vanuatu and the Pacific region. It signals the potential for more Ni Vanuatu women to pursue careers in the maritime industry, an area traditionally dominated by men
