flower-business-blossoms-for-efate-entrepreneur

Linda Maki, a 36-year-old mother in Erakor Village on the island of Efate, has turned her passion for planting flowers into a thriving small business since 2018.

What began as a personal hobby for home decoration has blossomed into a successful venture, driven by her desire to contribute financially to her family and inspired by the success of other local vendors.

Mrs. Maki, initially planted various types of flowers solely for decorative purposes. However, she soon recognised an opportunity after observing other women in her community earning income from their own flower sales. Motivated by the prospect of supporting her family, she decided to turn her hobby into a business.

As a committed mother, Mrs. Maki has faced considerable challenges in her efforts to contribute to her household finances. “Staying at home felt like a waste of time when I saw how other women were succeeding with their flower businesses,” she said. “I wanted to make a difference and help my husband with expenses like rent, utilities, and school fees for our children.”

Operating her flower business twice a month, Mrs. Maki typically earns between Vatu (VT)20,000 and VT30,000 in a single day of sales. This income has proven invaluable, providing substantial financial support for her family and validating her decision to venture into the flower business.

Mrs. Maki encourages other women and young girls in Port Vila to seize similar opportunities. “Don’t give up,” she advises. “There is money to be made right in front of you. There are numerous opportunities out there, and you can find something that suits your skills and interests.”
