You might have noticed a decorated container near the entrance to the French school JMG Le Clézio. It is the result of a project on gender equality. This issue is part of the republican values of the French school system, and the French school of Port Vila has decided to put a special emphasis on that issue.
As part of a chapter about gender equality in their English class in the year 2019, a year 9 class worked on women who have left their mark or are still leaving it in Vanuatu history. Some students prepared oral presentations on the Ni-Vanuatu woman of their choice and 7 names were then chosen, names of women whom they wished to honor for their actions.
Students selected Mrs. Hilda Lini, Mrs. Pakoa, Mrs. Mary Estelle Mahuk, Mrs. Juliette Pita, Mrs Grace Mera Molisa, Mrs. Miller Pata and Mrs Annolyn Lulu. Most of them very kindly came to the school on the day of the unveiling or sent their relatives when they couldn’t come. A true honour for the school!
The final project was to create a painting, presenting the names of the 7 women who had been selected, accompanied by a symbol representing for the students the action of each woman. They painted these 7 names on the grey container that you may have noticed in the French high school, along the main road. This container is in view from the road and honors these ” Important woman blong Vanuatu”. One way to remind everyone that men are not alone in writing the history of a country!
