We started the New year on a wonderful note!

After a well-deserved break, the team at Sista officially opened the office on Monday 8th January 2024.

This month was an opportunity for the ladies to regroup, plan and strategize for the year as the team spent the first week planning and going through all the projects the organization would be undertaking this year.

We acknowledged and celebrated International day of Education on 24 January! This year’s theme is, “Learning for lasting peace”, and is a reminder to continue to advocate for quality access to education, especially early education for girls and boys.

We also caught up with highlights in the news like, the number of babies born over the holidays, the cool initiative created through the Erromango Cultural Association and the rising concerns from Market Vendors over electronic scales.

Find out what else we got up to in January!

Chloe Utoctoc Norkiwoh Nalyal Molou – Sista Gat Style, Vanuatu Daily Post

We’re kicking off 2024 by celebrating the smart and sassy, Chloe!

The Erromangan and Scottish queen, graduated with a Bachelors in Marine Science last year and is now on a new journey exploring Vanuatu’s marine life with the brilliant Environment team at Wan Smol Bag.

Her warm and fun personality coincides beautifully with her sense of fashion as she encourages others to dress in comfort but also step out of your comfort zone to truly understand your style!

She lives by the quote, “Better out than in.” – a funny quote from the movie Shrek but she explains that it’s a fun and insightful way of dealing with our emotions.

“I think it is good to be emotional and understand how we feel, but we also need to be able to share those emotions and let them out so they don’t just completely consume us. If you want to laugh, then laugh; if you want cry, then cry – but it’s better out than in.”

Distribution of Sikmoon Storian booklets – Ambassade de France

The only project activity that the project team has worked on this month was the distribution of the sikmoon storian booklet. Sikmoon storian was developed and printed last year and this year we’ve started with the distribution.

A total of 25 booklets were planned to be distributed to the ladies who shared their stories about menstruation, 14 to the secondary schools around Efate and two copies to Ambassade de France who has supported this project.

The majority of the booklet has already been distributed, except a few that we are hoping to distribute in the coming months.

A big thank you to Ambassde de France for supporting us with this project and helping us create a space for young women and girls to share their lived experiences while also creating an opportunity to learn from each other.

This refresh will be done with the simultaneous mapping activity of organizations in Port Vila that work with Women to advance gender equality.

International Women’s Day 2024 Activity Planning

For International Women’s Day this year, Sista will be showcasing different projects that focus on issues affecting women and girls in Vanuatu, particularly those who are in leadership.

This year’s theme for International Women’s Day is, “Count Her in: Invest in Women. Accelerate Progress.”

The team at Sista have decided to showcase the organisations work to young girls and boys who attend Central School and Port Vila International School (PVIS). They believe that engaging the students in group discussions and Q&A’s will help them absorb and understand the information presented, but also ways in which they can break stereotypical gender norms and recognize the importance of allowing women and girls to participate and speak up in spaces that matter.

The Communications & Advocacy team at Sista will be leading this activity and have decided to carry out the presentations at both schools on Friday 8th March 2024. The team has put together plans for presenting at Central School and PVIS on the 8th of March.
