A man from Amaldenga village in south Pentecost has been sentenced to 7 years imprisonment for killing his grandmother on October this year.

George Quita hit his grandmother on the head with a big knife and left her to die in the grass. Her body was discovered by a child returning from school who alerted her parents.

According to the verdict of December 15, it is recorded in the pre-sentence report that Quita was motivated to attack his grandmother due to the spirits of the bushes and animals. He and his grandmother lived in a busy area.

However, it was revealed that he is a regular user of cannabis, which has more influence on his behaviour than the spirits of animals and bushes.

Quita pleaded guilty to his unlawful killing in court.

The offence carries a maximum penalty of 20 years imprisonment. Quita was given a 10 years’ imprisonment start sentence. The sentence was reduced by 30% due to Quita’s early admission of guilt, leaving 7 years.

Judge Edwin Peter Goldsbrough of the Supreme Court stated it’s not appropriate to suspend the sentence because it is too serious.

Quita’s sentence is effective from September 22 when he was taken into custody in Luganville, Santo.

He was given 14 days to appeal the sentence.
