Miller Pata, one of Vanuatu’s prominent athletes, is set to expand her career in sports leadership as she travels to New Zealand on Monday to participate in the Immersion Week hosted by the New Zealand Olympic Committee.

The event aims to develop women leaders in sports across Oceania.

Pata, selected by the Vanuatu Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (VASANOC), will join other participants from the region for the three-day event, which runs until October 5 in Auckland.

The program is part of an effort to promote leadership among women in sports, and being an athlete was a key criterion for selection.

VASANOC CEO David Lolo expressed his enthusiasm for Pata’s involvement, noting that this opportunity aligns with the organization’s goal of developing women in sports leadership.

“This is a great opportunity for Vanuatu to develop their women in sport,” Lolo said.

While Pata will be the only representative from Vanuatu due to others being unavailable at this time of year, Lolo remains optimistic that more such opportunities will arise.

He stressed the importance of sending more women to similar events, ideally twice a year, to gain valuable experiences and return to help advance sports development for women in Vanuatu.

“We need to see more leaders in sport in Vanuatu,” Lolo added, underscoring the need for growth in women’s sports leadership.

Pata, who also serves as the national coach for Beach Volleyball- a professional player herself, expressed her gratitude to VASANOC for choosing her to represent the nation.

Although this will be her first time participating in an overseas workshop, she is excited about the opportunity.

“As a woman, this is a wonderful opportunity, and I hope the workshop will be instrumental in helping me develop my career further,” Pata said.

The Immersion Week offers a significant platform for Pata to not only gain valuable skills but also to contribute to the ongoing development of women’s sports in Vanuatu upon her return.
