November was a month of reflection, collaboration, and connection for the Sista team. From honouring the legacy of women who shaped our organisation, to contributing to national conversations on governance, access to justice, media, and women’s political participation, our work this month continued to centre feminist values, partnership, and accountability. Here’s a snapshot of what we’ve been up to.
Honouring Astrid
Official Opening of the Astrid Room
We officially opened the Astrid Room, named in honour of the late Dr. Astrid Kersten. The Sista team was joined by Astrid’s husband, Mohammed, and son, Turan, for this deeply meaningful moment. The room stands as a tribute to Astrid’s enduring legacy and her invaluable contribution to Sista’s work, values, and feminist vision.
Governance, Policy & National Engagement
VANGO Board Retreat
Sista’s Executive Director attended a full-day VANGO Board retreat focused on governance reflections, lessons learned, and priorities for the year ahead. The retreat also provided space to collectively oppose the discriminatory SHEFA by-law restricting menstruating women from handling food—a by-law that was later recalled by the Prime Minister.
Pacific Australia Skills Consultation
Sista participated in a consultation with Pacific Australia Skills to discuss how skills development initiatives can better align with Government of Vanuatu priorities and promote inclusive employment. Insights from this consultation will inform the Pacific Australia Skills Country Plan for Vanuatu.
CARE Emergency Preparedness Plan Workshop
The team attended the second day of CARE’s Emergency Preparedness Plan Workshop, which focused on strengthening collaboration among partners and enhancing inclusive, effective emergency preparedness and response through practical, partner-led sessions.
Women’s Leadership, Safety & Access to Justice
Laaha Stakeholder Consultation
Sista took part in a UNICEF-led consultation exploring Laaha, a virtual safe space designed by adolescent girls and women. The session included a platform demonstration and discussions on how Laaha could be adapted for use in the Vanuatu context.
Survivor Victim Charter Sensitisation Training
Sista attended a training hosted by the Ministry of Justice and Community Services to strengthen understanding and implementation of the Survivor Victim Charter, supporting survivor-centred approaches across service delivery sectors.
Access to Justice Steering Committee Meeting
Sista participated in the fourth Access to Justice Steering Committee meeting, where stakeholders shared progress updates and welcomed new members. Sista supported the project through the development of logo concepts, with one design selected pending final revisions.
Media, Storytelling & Advocacy
BBC Media Action Report Analysis
Sista joined a review of BBC Media Action’s research on Vanuatu’s media and communication landscape. Supported by UK Aid, the study highlighted how communities access and engage with media, with VANGO playing a key role in data collection.
Partnership Meeting with Vanuatu Daily Post
We met with the Vanuatu Daily Post team to strengthen an ongoing partnership that has amplified women’s voices through articles, creative features, and exciting upcoming collaborations.
The Round Table Podcast – Episode 1
We officially launched the first episode of The Round Table Podcast, featuring a conversation with Markson Taiki on Vanuatu’s music industry and social media culture. This project is supported by PACMAS, Wan Nambanga, and Vanuatu Daily Post, and we’re excited to keep the conversations going.
Brata Gat Style – First Edition
November also marked the launch of Brata Gat Style with Vanuatu Daily Post. Our first feature spotlighted musician Ethan-Xavier Hakwa, celebrating Ni-Vanuatu men, culture, fashion, and identity through a fresh and affirming lens.
Campaigns, Coalitions & Community
16 Days of Activism – Stanap Strong Platforms
For the 16 Days of Activism, Sista supported the campaign by sharing themed content and key dates across the Stanap Strong Akensem Vaelens social media platforms, amplifying messages to end violence against women and girls.
NGO Day 2025
Sista participated in NGO Day at Saralana, hosting a booth to promote Stanap Strong and Sista Library. The team also introduced plans for a new community earthquake preparedness guide, with desk review work already underway for its development next year.
WRC Communications Exchange
The We Rise Coalition Communications Officer took part in a DFAT-supported exchange with femLINKpacific in Fiji. The exchange focused on cross-learning, strategic planning, and strengthening coalition relationships through hands-on communications collaboration.
Thank You for Walking With Us 💜
As always, thank you to our partners, allies, supporters, and community for continuing to stand with us. November reminded us of the power of collaboration, storytelling, and collective action as we work towards a more just and equal Vanuatu.
