Port Vila Deputy Mayor and Port Vila City Council (PVCC) member, Erdian Melipsis, has been formally charged with domestic violence and is currently on bail pending the completion of a Preliminary Inquiry (PI) before the Magistrates’ Court.

During a court appearance yesterday, the prosecution applied for an adjournment, informing the court that police investigations are ongoing and require additional time to be finalised before the matter can proceed to the PI stage.

Senior Magistrate Kibeon Nimbwen granted the prosecution’s application and adjourned the matter to 11 February at 10:00am.

It is alleged that the deputy mayor assaulted his wife during the New Year period. He was arrested earlier this month and remanded at the Correctional Services Centre before being released on bail on 20 January. His bail has since been extended until the next court date. As part of his bail conditions, the accused is prohibited from interfering with prosecution witnesses, is not permitted to leave the island of Efate, and must report to the Vanuatu Police Force every Friday before 4:30pm.

It is understood that further charges may be considered, with the prosecution indicating that a possible breach of the Leadership Code could be added.

Mr. Melipsis remains presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of law.
