Vila East School will remain open for student registration next week, according to Acting Principal Dorina Lala Sam.

Ms Sam explained that although registration was initially scheduled to close last week, many parents did not enroll their children. As a result, the school has extended the registration period to accommodate those who have yet to complete the process.

In response to the recent earthquake and its aftermath, the school has implemented a new class schedule to ensure student safety. Primary students will attend classes in the morning, while secondary students will have their sessions in the afternoon. This adjustment allows teachers to supervise students outside during school hours, ensuring they are prepared to respond effectively in the event of another earthquake.

Two of the school’s buildings were severely damaged during the earthquake, and two more sustained damage from aftershocks. Classes are now being held in tents and in the remaining safe classrooms. To accommodate this, an alternative timetable has been introduced, with primary students attending from 8:00 am to 11:00 am and secondary students from 12:00 pm to 3:30 pm.

Despite these challenges, the school is striving to maintain academic progress. Teacher aides have been introduced into classrooms to support learning, and a school-based development programme has helped both teachers and students adjust. Some teachers have moved on, while others have taken temporary positions through the Teaching Service Commission (TSC), which has expressed confidence in their ability to manage classes effectively.

Sam acknowledged that last year’s academic performance suffered due to teacher strikes, transitions, and the introduction of new subjects. However, she believes that 2025 has begun on a stronger note, with a solid academic executive team in place to oversee the school’s operations.

As part of the school’s policy, students are prohibited from bringing sweets to school. This rule aims to promote better concentration, improved health, and physical well-being. Instead, parents are encouraged to provide local snacks and nutritious meals for their children.

In addition, Vila East School will introduce online learning for students in Years 7 to 10 this year. Teachers have undergone training with Lenakel College to familiarise themselves with their online learning platform. The initiative, authorised by the Ministry of Education and Training (MoET), is intended to ensure continuity of education despite disruptions caused by natural disasters.

The Acting Principal voiced her pride in the school’s leadership team for 2025, acknowledging their strong academic credentials and commitment to supporting students.

Regarding enrollment, she confirmed that out of 1,068 expected students, fewer than 1,000 have registered so far, with the remaining students expected to complete their enrollment in the coming days.
