The Vaka Pasifika Project, funded by the European Union and implemented by UNDP, works across the fiscal ecosystem of Pacific Big Ocean States. One key strand of this work focuses on strengthening the capacity of journalists to understand Public Finance Management (PFM) and to tell the human stories behind fiscal decisions. Through training, mentorship, and editorial support, the project helps journalists move beyond headline-driven budget reporting and toward deeper, community-centred analysis.

Established in 2023, the Regional Economic Media Network uses a ‘learning-by-doing’ model to build expertise and confidence in public finance reporting. Its purpose is to better connect national budget numbers with real-world impacts—especially for marginalised communities whose experiences often remain invisible in mainstream economic coverage.

Each year, on Anti-Corruption Day, we compile the network’s published stories into a regional volume. This third edition brings together reporting on topics ranging from youth migration and water access, to health financing, sports development, and agriculture. While diverse in focus, all stories carry a shared message: how we raise, allocate, and adjust public resources profoundly shapes people’s lives. These stories are detailed, grounded, and nuanced.

Together, they offer powerful insights into how Pacific communities experience public finance—and why re-imagining fiscal systems is essential to delivering services, strengthening trust, and advancing the Sustainable Development Goals.
