The Shefa Football Association (FA) is gearing up for its first participation in the Vanuatu Football Federation (VFF) Women’s Champions League.

The Shefa FA, which manages seven leagues—six for men and one for women—has announced that Penama FC, champions of the South Efate Women’s Football League (SEWFL), will represent Shefa in the tournament.

Currently champions from other Member Associations (MA’s) include Port Vila, Tafea, Sanma, Luganville, Penama, Torba and Shefa FA.

President of the Shefa FA, Michael Joseph, expressed optimism about the development of women’s football in the area, emphasizing the importance of inter-league matches to foster competition.

“The SEWFL championship is a great opportunity for other Member Associations (MAs) to engage in matches, building a more competitive environment within Shefa FA,” he said.

In a show of this growing competitive spirit, the East Efate League, part of Shefa’s network of leagues, has indicated plans to play against South Efate teams next month, further strengthening football in the area.

The SEWFL championship’s ongoing progress and Penama FC’s participation in the national stage underline SFA’s commitment to promoting football excellence at both regional and national levels.

In the last VFF Champions league tournament, only three teams participated including Port Vila, Tafea FA champion -Loukatai FC and Torba FA Champion-Waterfall FC.

SEWFL, the only women’s league under SFA, is nearing the end of its first leg of the championship.

The second leg is scheduled to commence on January 18, 2024, and will conclude before the end of May.
