A women’s group led by former Southern Ward Municipal Councillor Mrs. Marie Kalkoa is urging the Government to open the Police Post and Aid Post at Nambatri on a permanent basis.

With the increasing population of young people in the area, her group is urging the Government to open the Police Post along with the Aid Post to support elderly people, widows, children and young people.

Mrs. Kalkoa is concerned that noisy young people are wandering the streets at night, causing a nuisance while under the influence of marijuana.

“For this reason, we want our Police Post and Health Post to operate on a permanent basis to provide security and healthcare for our women, widows and youths,” she said.

Asked if she is going to recontest the next Port Vila City Council election next month, Mrs. Kalkoa said her voters’ frustrations have convinced her to contest again.

“We are taxpayers and pay land rents to the Government and property tax to the Municipality, so please hear our pleas and act to help us,” she pleaded.

Also speaking as a representative of widows, she said there are elderly widows in their area who have to walk home from the bus stop on the main street to the dark street corners where they live, and it is not safe at night.

“We urgently need light. Solar lights can light up the dark streets,” she suggested.

A youth representative of the group also supported her call for lights along their dark streets, saying the presence of young drug users along the street is a threat.

“That is why young people need our police to man the Police Post on a permanent basis,” he said.
