The Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) continues to implement training to improve its Curriculum Improvement Programme, reaffirming its commitment to raising the quality of education in Vanuatu.
The MoET recently partnered with the Australian Government to deliver intensive leadership training for principals and deputy principals from 40 schools across all provinces.
The training provided school leaders with practical tools and strategies to strengthen teaching and learning, with a particular emphasis on literacy and numeracy. Sessions focused on effective instructional leadership, planning for School Improvement Plans, Curriculum Improvement Programme implementation, and fostering continuous professional development among teachers. A key aim of the programme was enhancing the ability of principals to act as instructional coaches within their schools.
To support the Curriculum Improvement Programme’s aim of strengthening schools’ capacity to implement the national curriculum effectively—with a particular focus on improving teaching and learning in literacy and numeracy—baseline studies have been conducted in the 40 schools.
The vital insights of these studies underpin data-informed planning and targeted school interventions. The Ministry strongly emphasises the use of evidence to drive decision-making and ensure meaningful progress in learning outcomes.
The Minister of Education and Training, Simil Johnson, showed his support for the training by engaging with participants. The Minister spoke about education’s critical role in developing Vanuatu and the importance of strong leadership in schools.
Minister Johnson said, “Strong principals build strong teachers, and strong teachers create lifelong learners.”
“Our children’s success depends on the quality of teaching they receive,” the Minister said. “That is why we must invest in the growth of our school leaders, who play a critical role in shaping resourceful, capable citizens for Vanuatu’s future.”
He also stressed the value of data in making effective decisions, reminding school leaders that their dedication is vital to driving real change in classrooms and communities. The Minister’s involvement and words inspired and motivated the participating principals and their deputies.
The MoET continues to prioritise improved educational outcomes by supporting school leaders and teachers across the country.
Through initiatives like the Curriculum Improvement Programme, the MoET is laying the groundwork for a more effective and equitable education system for all Ni-Vanuatu children.
In collaboration with communities, schools, and development partners, MoET is committed to realising Vanuatu’s National Sustainable Development Plan (2016–2030) in line with the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This commitment guarantees equal access to quality education through well-managed schools, reflecting MoET’s dedication to empowering educators and strengthening Vanuatu’s education system.
