vanuatu-celebrates-widows-resilience-and-gender-equality

Saralana Park in Port Vila was alive with celebration yesterday as the Vanuatu Widows Association (VWA) marked its annual Widows Association Day.

The event, though typically observed on June 23 in line with the United Nations’ (UN) International Widows Day (IWD), was held on June 28 this year to accommodate the Sunday observance.

This year’s theme, “Accelerating the Achievements of Gender Equality,” focussed on the role widows play in advancing gender equality and their contributions to the economy.

The VWA, established in 2012, draws inspiration from a global initiative led by the UN Secretary-General (SG) at the UN Headquarters in New York. Since its inception, the VWA has been dedicated to celebrating the achievements of widows in Vanuatu and providing them with a supportive community.

In an interview with the Vanuatu Daily Post, the VWA Honorary Presidents, Mrs. Mary Lini and Mrs. Lucy Sandy, shared the Association’s mission and the importance of its work.

“This Association was set up to help widows in the country feel like they have a group, giving them a sense of belonging,” they explained.

Recognising the struggles faced by widows, Mrs. Lini and Mrs. Sandy commented on the need for collective support. “We saw that widows really struggle, so this group was also set up to help widows in any way we can to meet their needs,” they said.

They appealed to the broader community, saying, “If you see a widow in need, lend them a hand.”

The celebration at Saralana Park was not just a day of festivities but also a call to action.

They highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by widows and the fundamental role of the community in supporting them.

The VWA’s efforts align with the goals of IWD, which aims to raise awareness about the problems widows face, and promote initiatives that empower them.

IWD focuses on addressing the unique issues faced by widows, including social stigma, economic deprivation, and lack of legal protection.

The event saw a vibrant turnout, with speeches, and various activities that celebrated the resilience and contributions of widows in Vanuatu.

Participants echoed the sentiments of Mrs. Lini and Mrs. Sandy, reinforcing the importance of community support and unity.
