Gail Waki Tamakam has built a career doing what she is passionate about: construction. From starting out as a graduate construction student herself at the Vanuatu Institute of Technology (VIT) in 2000, Gail has become the teacher and is now Vanuatu’s first female Building and Construction Trainer at the Australia-Pacific Technical College (APTC).

“As a female in this male domain trade for over 15 years now, I’ve seen that when I respect myself, I gained respect from my male workmates. By doing so, I enjoy working with and training them,” says Gail.

“Women and girls often think about having their own house and decorating it. But if you can build your own house, you can set it up the way it suits you. You don’t have to depend on your boyfriend or husband to do these things,” she says.
