16-Days-of-Activism – Australia-supports-the-elimination-of-violence-against-women-and-girls

Each year, Australia joins Vanuatu and other countries around the world to mark the 16 Days of Activism campaign to end violence against women and girls.

The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women marks the launch of the UNiTE campaign (November 25- December 10), concluding on 10 December, International Human Rights Day.

During the campaign, individuals and organisations will call for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls and raise awareness on this important issue.

“Violence against women and girls has a profound and devastating impact on individuals, communities, and countries,” the Australian High Commission (AHC) relayed via a statement yesterday.

“Our region has some of the highest rates of intimate partner violence in the world, with intimate partners inflicting violence against 68 percent of women. Globally, statistics show that before the pandemic, perpetrators inflicted sexual or physical violence against 245 million women and girls within a 12-month period. Reports suggest that Gender-Based Violence (GBV) has intensified since the outbreak of COVID-19.”

Australian High Commissioner to Vanuatu, Max Willis, said “gender inequality and disrespect for women are root causes of violence against women and girls, but women and girls in Australia and Vanuatu have the right to feel safe in their homes and communities.”

“Australia acknowledges the challenges ahead to stop this violence and commits to working together with Vanuatu so we all do better and do more,” Mr. Willis said.

Australia is supporting programs in Vanuatu and across the Pacific region to address and prevent GBV. Partners including Vanuatu Women’s Centre, United Nations (UN) Women and World Vision are working alongside Vanuatu government agencies, including the Vanuatu Police Force, Ministry of Justice and Community Services and Ministry of Health to support women and children affected by violence and ensure safe and inclusive communities.

This year’s theme in Vanuatu is “It starts with Men.” Australia is pleased to support and participate in the Vanuatu Police Force and Ministry of Justice’s calendar of events over the campaign period.
