The Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) has affirmed its support for protecting women and girls as Vanuatu marks International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
This day is a reminder of the critical need to build a society where every woman and girl can live free from violence.
To demonstrate its commitment, Ministry staff wore white ribbons on Monday 25 November, standing in solidarity with women and girls and supporting MoET’s dedication to raising awareness on this critical issue.
The white ribbon is a powerful emblem of hope for a world free from violence, urging everyone to stand up against abuse, discrimination, and all forms of Gender-Based Violence (GBV).
Violence against women remains a grave violation of human rights, one that affects all communities and individuals. While this day highlights the impact on women and girls, the MoET also recognises that violence affects men and boys and is committed to addressing this issue universally.
The MoET is dedicated to using education to challenge attitudes and behaviours that perpetuate violence cycles and promote equality, respect, and safety in all educational settings across Vanuatu.
The Ministry has implemented programs focused on teaching the values of respect and inclusion, which are vital to fostering supportive environments for students, teachers, and families.
The MoET’s ongoing initiatives include the following:
• School-Based Awareness Campaigns: Integrating discussions on respect, consent, and healthy relationships into school curricula to encourage students to value and protect each other.
• Teacher Training: Empowering educators with the tools and resources to recognise and address GBV and promote safe school environments.
• Community Engagement: Partnering with parents, community leaders, and organisations to strengthen local efforts in supporting women’s safety and wellbeing.
In collaboration with communities, schools, and development partners, MoET is committed to realising Vanuatu’s National Sustainable Development Plan (2016-2030) in line with the United Nations (UN) 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
This commitment guarantees equal access to quality education through well-managed schools, reflecting the MoET’s dedication to empowering educators and strengthening Vanuatu’s education system.
