This week’s ‘Champion profile’ features Unaise Osea Kalchiwota, an 18-year-old Commerce student at Ecole Colardo, originate from Mele, Efate.

She was honored with the ‘Women player of the year’ award at the Vanuatu Basketball Federation (VBF) awards ceremony.

She began playing basketball at the age of 14, participating in the Tupuji Basketball Club (TBC) alongside her mother. Although her mother has since stopped playing, she continues to be an active member of TBC to this day.

Her father Sokomanu Kachiwota were member of the Vanuatu national men’s basketball team during the Pacific Mini games. Her grandfather travel to various places such as Japan, Tahiti and Noumea, to represent Vanuatu basketball team as well.

Osea considers basketball to be her sanctuary, especially as she navigates her senior year in school, balancing academic responsibilities and assessments.

Returning to the court for training sessions consistently brings a smile to her face.

“My grandfather has always been a source of inspiration for me, as he is the reason I became involved in this sport. While all of my siblings participate in basketball, I am the only one who has approached it with a serious commitment,” she said.

“I have discovered a sense of strength within my team, as we consistently engage in enjoyable activities during training sesss. We openly discuss our challenges, and the friendship we encourage a supportive environment. Consequently, I perceive this team as a refuge that provides comfort away from home and school.”

Osea engages in different hobbies, including football, handball, and volleyball, in addition to singing during her leisure time.
